Atlas / Plate 23

Plate 23 · from Chinese

福倒了

The custom is a homophone. Translate the meaning and the inversion is a decoration. Describe the inversion and the arrival is gone. You need both, and only one language hears them as one.

The New Year custom of posting the character 福 upside down, so that 福倒了 (“fortune is upside down”) can be heard as 福到了 (“fortune has arrived”). The pun is Mandarin, where 倒 and 到 are homophones. It is not safe to assume every Sinitic variety makes the same pair.

Where the line breaks

Alignment of 福倒了 into 4 lanes. Arrives, thins, and breaks are written in each cell. The same information is in the text alternative below.

What happens to “到” in each lane
LaneFormStatusBreakWhat happens
English arrived Breaks Sound or wordplay Arrival and inversion are different English words. Stating both is an explanation of the pun, not the pun.
Japanese 来た Breaks Sound or wordplay Arrived, with no echo of inversion.
German ist da Breaks Sound or wordplay A separate clause.
French arrivé Breaks Sound or wordplay Said beside the inversion, not inside it.

The joint

You paste 福 on the door upside down. A visitor says the paper is inverted, 倒了, and is answered, or answers themselves, that fortune has arrived, 到了. In Mandarin the two verbs are the same sound. The custom is a pun you can see. The character has to be upside down for the ear to have a reason to make the leap.

English can say “upside-down fortune” and it can say “fortune has arrived.” It cannot make those one event. A translator who wants the joke has to tell it, the way you explain a magic trick. The explanation is accurate and the trick is over. Japanese shares the character 福 and the New Year posting. 逆さ and 来た do not rhyme. The shared writing is not the pun.

The limit is marked because it is real: this is a Mandarin homophony. Cantonese dou for the two words is close and not the same tone story. The plate does not claim the custom fails in every variety. It claims the English, Japanese, German, and French glosses cannot hear the pair.

Why this break matters to a reader

A reader shown a photograph of an inverted 福, with the caption “good luck,” has been shown a decoration. A reader told the pun has been shown why the decoration is wrong-way-up on purpose. In a story set at the new year, the upside-down paper is a line of dialogue. Lose the homophone and the door says less than the people at the door hear.
